FAQ · Measurement
How do I measure my vent opening?
Measure the inside width and height of the duct or wall opening. Do not order from the outer frame of the old cover.

Quick Answer
Expose the opening, tape inside width × height in inches, write it down, then match the closest SOKNOCKK catalog size. A stamped label is a clue only. Finish (White/Black) comes after size.
Steps
- Remove or carefully work around the old cover when safe. Keep screws in a cup.
- Seat the tape on the clear rectangle — the hole, not the decorative face.
- Measure inside width; measure inside height.
- Write width × height (example: 10 × 4). Measure twice if the opening looks uneven.
- Photograph the opening with the tape in frame when you can.

Opening vs Outer Frame
The outer decorative face is almost always larger than the hole. If you measure the face, you will usually pick the wrong size family. Treat stamped labels the same way — they name a family, they do not replace the tape. See Nominal vs Actual Opening Size.

Example Reading
| You observe | You write | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Clear hole ~10 × 4; old face stamped 10×4 | 10 × 4 | Shop 10×4 Confirmed rows |
| Clear hole ~16 × 4; old face looks “wide” | 16 × 4 | Do not guess from face length alone |
| Between two families | Both candidates + photos | Ask before ordering |
Common Mistakes
- Measuring outer trim tip-to-tip.
- Trusting only a stamped label.
- Choosing Black/White before size is locked.
- Rounding up “to be safe” without photos.
Ceiling locations use the same width × height method; they need safer support during removal — see How to Replace a Vent Cover.
After You Measure
- Open Vent Covers and find the closest size.
- On Confirmed pages, compare the size-specific How-to-Measure module to your notes.
- Choose White or Black only after size is settled (color FAQ).
- Buy only Confirmed Size+Color rows, or use Contact / quote if you need help.

When to Stop and Ask
Pause ordering if the opening is crushed, non-rectangular, crumbling, or clearly between two catalog families. Send width × height, photos, and finish preference through Contact, Add to Quote, or Business Inquiry. Do not invent a size to “make it fit.”
